This Removes Microplastics From Your Water!
It's no secret, our water is no longer as pure as we’d like it to be. Microplastics have now been detected in tap water, bottled water, rivers, oceans, and even rainfall. And because our bodies are made of more than 60% water, the quality of the water we drink truly matters.
That’s why a recent scientific discovery caught our attention in a really positive way...
Scientists at Tarleton State University have found that two everyday foods — okra and fenugreek — have a natural ability to help remove microplastics from water. In laboratory studies, scientists extracted plant-based gels from these foods and tested how well they could pull microplastics out of contaminated water.
Here’s what they found:
- okra extract removed about 67% of microplastics
- fenugreek extract removed about 93%
- when combined together in a 1:1 blend, removal reached around 90% in under 30 minutes
These natural plant compounds work by binding to microplastics, making them clump together so they can be pulled out of the water more easily.
What’s especially encouraging is that these natural extracts performed as well as — or even better than — some of the synthetic chemicals currently used in wastewater treatment. And unlike many synthetic treatment chemicals, okra and fenugreek are natural and non-toxic.
This could revolutionize how we think about microplastic pollution and how we filter water in both large water systems and potentially even smaller, home-based solutions down the road.
This research also reenforces how nature already holds the answers to many of today’s environmental challenges.
