What the Clinical Research Actually Shows
 
Saffron has been studied in more than two dozen randomized controlled trials for its effects on mood, anxiety, and depression. The results are consistent enough that they're hard to ignore.
 
A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Nutrition Reviews looked at 23 randomized controlled trials on saffron supplementation. The findings:
  • Saffron had a large positive effect size for depressive symptoms compared with placebo (g = 0.99, p < 0.001)
  • Saffron had a large positive effect size for anxiety symptoms compared with placebo (g = 0.95, p < 0.006)
  • When used alongside conventional antidepressants, saffron produced an even larger effect on depressive symptoms (g = 1.23, p = 0.028)
In plain English: across two dozen rigorously designed trials, saffron produced meaningful, measurable improvements in depression and anxiety — both on its own and as an adjunct to medication.
 
As Effective as Prescription Antidepressants — With Fewer Side Effects
 
One of the most striking findings in the saffron research is how it stacks up head-to-head against SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), the most commonly prescribed class of antidepressants.
 
In a 2017 double-blind clinical trial published in Pharmacopsychiatry, 66 patients with major depressive disorder and anxious distress were randomly assigned to receive either 30 mg of saffron per day or 40 mg of citalopram (Celexa) per day for six weeks.
 
Both groups improved significantly. But when the researchers compared the two treatments head-to-head, the difference in outcomes was statistically insignificant (p = 0.984). The frequency of side effects was also not significantly different.
 
The researchers concluded that saffron was "a potential efficacious and tolerable treatment for major depressive disorder with anxious distress."
That was just one study. A broader 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Nutrition Reviews looked at multiple head-to-head trials comparing saffron against SSRIs across depression and anxiety outcomes. The conclusion:
 
"The effectiveness of saffron in treating both depression and anxiety was not statistically different from that of SSRIs. Furthermore, patients receiving saffron experienced far fewer adverse events, essentially signifying that treatment with saffron, while demonstrating the same effectiveness as SSRIs, is the safer option of the two."
 
Earlier meta-analyses reached similar conclusions. A 2013 meta-analysis in the Journal of Integrative Medicine found a null effect size between saffron and antidepressants — meaning both were similarly effective at reducing depression — while saffron showed a large effect size versus placebo.
 
How It Actually Works
 
Saffron isn't a single compound. It's a collection of bioactive molecules that work together to influence mood, stress, and brain function from several directions at once. The three most studied are:
